Lt. LeRoy Nennig Jr.

Lt. Nennig joined the Sheriff's Department in September, 1974. In his time with the department, Lt. Nennig has served in countless positions, including a member of the SWAT team, later as the team leader, Hostage Negotiator, and Lieutenant of Investigations.

On August 15, 2004, on Highway 23, near Plymouth, while assisting at the scene of a car fire, Lt. Nennig, was struck by a passing motorist and killed.

"He was a person who you certainly would want backing you up if you got into a situation"

Lt. Nennig is survived by his wife, Charlette, and three sons, Lance, Nathan, and Craig.

Deputy Kenneth L. Van Ess

Deputy Van Ess, starting his career as a deputy in the Jail Division, later transferred to Patrol, where he was honored three times with the department's award of excellence.

Deputy Van Ess, an initial member of the department SWAT team, was known to be one of the highest performing members in Patrol during time with the department.

Deputy Van Ess, passed away unexpectedly at his home in the early morning hours of November 2, 1996.

"Ken's work ethic and contribution to the department have been greatly missed."

Deputy Van Ess is survived by his wife, Janice, and two children, Lindsay and Courtney.
